Shaving razor tips FAQs

Here are some of your frequently asked questions that relate to shaving tips for both men and women:

If I shave, will it make my hair grow back darker?

No. Shaved hair does not make grow back any darker, thicker, longer or faster. These factors are based on your body's genetics and hormones and cannot be affected by shaving. However, it is correct that the hair will appear to be darker and thicker than before the shave. This is because when the hair grows back it has a blunt tip rather than the fine tapered end that new hairs have. Therefore, when a previously shaved hair starts to appear it is already dark and thick.

How many times should I use shaving razors?

People tend to throw away razors before they are blunt. They do last longer than most people think. What typically happens to a blade is that microscopic crystals from the water form on the blade edge. These crystals drag against the skin causing much of the razor burn. You can prevent crystals from forming by always rinsing the blade in cold water, never hot, and dipping it in rubbing alcohol after the final rinse. The alcohol will displace the water and the dissolved minerals, and evaporate, leaving the blade clean. Then store the shaving razor with the blade facing upwards to prevent any minor crystals forming on the bagged edge. If using alcohol is too much trouble, at least dry the blade on a towel or tissue in the direction of the blade.

The performance of the razor can be improved by soaking it in cold water before a shave as this will keep the blade hard and tight. Heating a blade in hot water will cause it to expand and become dull.

Do you have any razor shaving tips?

Here are a collection of tips and techniques that you can consider to improve your shaving experience:

  • Make sure the angle of the razor blade is correct. It should be at no greater angle than 45 degrees otherwise you are more likely to get cuts. The razor should glide effortlessly over your skin and you should hardly feel it.
  • Try to shave while in the shower. The steam from the shower helps prepare the face by opening your pours and softening the hairs. If you leave the shave until the end of your shower your skin should be ideally moistened. Many stores now sell mirrors that stay fog-free especially for using razors in showers and bathrooms.
  • Try using an electric shaver if you have sensitive skin or bad acne.
  • If you have an extra thick beard, apply a warm face cloth compress to soften the hairs in addition to a warm shower prior to shaves.
  • You are more likely to get cuts with a new razor than one which has been used a couple of times. Apply less pressure to avoid all those nicks.
  • Shave often to improve your complexion unless you are prone to ingrown hairs. Shaving exfoliates the skin and will look good if followed up with a good moisturising regime.
  • If you are prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps then try using 1 of the specially designed razors which are typically marketed to Afro-American men. The blade in these shaving razors is protected by a thicker guard so as not to get too close to the skin.
