Post operative care for lazer hair removal

After undergoing lazer surgery, it is necessary for the patients to take good care of themselves. Some patients consider that what happens to them after surgery may be a side effect, complication or pain and so on. However, that is not totally true. That is why they need to know what side effects actually happens to them so that they can perform the necessary post operative care.

Redness is one common side effect that takes place when a patient has undergone lazer hair removal treatment, also called perifollicular edema. However, patients should not panic because of the redness or erythema. The colour and density of the patients' hair itself will determine how intense or how long the redness will last. Usually, redness will last not more than a day. But in case it doesn't clear, patients are strongly recommended to see their doctors since this almost never happens.

Besides redness, a patient of lazer hair removal surgery may encounter a situation in which his hair sheds off in a few weeks but grows back afterwards. The patient should be informed that this happens because the lazer treatment has activated dormant hairs. However, hairs will grow in far lower density if the patient compares it to the previous hair growth he experienced before. This may be one reason why patients need multiple sessions for the treatment.

After passing through surgery, a patient is recommended not to use hot water to wash. He is not recommended either to leave the skin as it is after being washed with hot water. Tepid water should be used in place of hot water and it may be necessary to apply sun block which can effectively block the UV A and UV B rays exposure from the sun.

If the patient feels pain after the surgery, ice packs may be useful to apply. Ice packs help reduce swelling that sometimes happens after surgery.

If the patient has a record of being infected by bacteria, viruses or fungi, it is essential for the patient to complete his course of prescribed medicine prior to lazer treatment.

In case a patient happens to experience epidermal injury then it is recommended that he apply topical antibiotic ointments and creams twice a day.

After undergoing lazer hair removal, the patient's skin becomes more delicate so it will be wise not to scratch the area that was treated and to apply sun screens in order to prevent unwanted effects to the skin.

The good news, especially if the patients are women, is that the use of makeup is totally allowable. Using makeup will help cover the redness that occurs so that the patient will feel more confident while walking out of the clinic. Nevertheless, there is a chance that crusting and blistering may appear. But it depends on the treated skin type and if this happens, makeup should be avoided.
